The Vegetannual...your guide to eating seasonally

I am reading an amazing book right now called Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver (book report to come!).  The author heavily supports the idea of eating locally and seasonally and provides the illustration below as a guide to eating seasonally.  This "plant" is termed a "vegetannual".  It acts as though all vegetables come from one plant and it shows what is in season each month during the summer.  Obviously not everything is on this picture but it's a fun guide to use when trying to remember how to eat seasonally.

Why eat local and seasonal food?
  • Better for the environment because your food isn't being shipped all around the world
  • Your money goes directly to your local small-scale farmers
  • You will get the most nutrients out of your fruits and vegetables because they go from farm to table in a very short amount of time
  • And best of all it tastes infinitely better than the bland, out of season fruits and vegetables in the grocery store!
