the importance of breath.

“Breathing in I know that I’m alive, breathing out I smile at my aliveness.” Thich Nhat Hanh

Did you know that the bottom of your lungs have fibers that, when oxygenated, actually calm your parasympathetic nervous system?

As human beings we tend to only breath in the top half of our lungs due to the stressful nature of our society.  Ayurvedic doctor John Douillard gives a great example.  Think of running into a bear in the woods…that quick, stressed, short inhale you would take in fear is how most Americans breath on a daily basis.  Think about what that is doing to your nervous system!

So take a moment, drop your shoulders, close your eyes, and take a long, slow, deeeeeep breath.  You will immediately feel less stressed and more relaxed.  Bringing consciousness to your breath will bring peace to your life.
